About David Holt, Sr.

David HOLT

was born about 1685 in Surry Co., Virginia. He was born about 1685 in Hog Island, Surry County, Virginia.2915 He died about 1748 at the age of 63 in Hanover County, VA.2915 David died about 1750 at the age of 65 in Virginia. He was also known as David Holt , Sr.. 6. "Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants", "Vol II (1666-1695)", abstracted by Nell Marion Nugent, published by Virginia State Library, Richmond, 1977; 1706 May 2 Vol III p.107 (Patent Bk 9, p.728): "[Grant to] David Holt, 300 acs. New Kent Co. S. side of York River, bet brs of sd river & brs of Totopotomoys Cr. Adj. Col John Page, Esqr; land of Edward Hawkins & Nicho Gentry. Granted Samuell Gentry, 21 Oct 1684 who deeded same to David Crawford ... 5 Jan 1685 [=1686]."

From his father John's notes: On or about 1704 John Holt "laid violent hands upon himself" (suicide), contrary to English Laws, and controversy resulted, as in a suicide the land of the perpetrator reverts to the crown. After much legal hassle John's sons John Jr., Charles, Benjamin, and Joseph attended the hearing. His other son David, had already received a substantial land grant from his grandfather David Crafford prior to David's twenty-first birthday.

The second circumstance supporting the hypothesis that Samuel Gentry and his descendants did not survive or remain in Virginia is a recently published record of a later patent concerning the 300 acres originally granted to Samuel Gentry. The patent, an extract of which is quoted in full below, can be found on page 107 of Nugent's recently published Volume III concerning patents issued between 1695 and 1732.

"David Holt, 300 acs. New Kent Co., S. side of York River, bet. brs. of Sd. River and and brs. of Totopotomoys Creek, 2 May 1706, p. 728 (of Patent Book 9). Adj. Col John Page, Esqr., land of Edward Hawkins and Nicho, Gentry. Granted Samuell Gentry, 21 Oct. 1684, who deeded same to David Crawford, Grandfather of said David Holt, 5 Jan. 1685,who by deed of gift, dated 28 May 1686, conveyed to said David Holt, then and still a minor, the land is granted by order, etc." Parents: John M. HOLT and Ann CRAFFORD.

Spouse: Margaret DIBDALL. Margaret DIBDALL and David HOLT were married in 1712 in Virginia. Children were: Margaret "Grizzel" HOLT, Ann HOLT, Col. Dibdall HOLT, John HOLT, David HOLT , Jr., Jane HOLT, Sarah HOLT, Mary HOLT, William HOLT.

David Holt was the grandson of Colonel David Crawford who was a member of the House of Burgesses and an early plantation owner in Virginia.

David Crawford was born circa 1625, in Scotland, emigrating to the Virginia Colony with his father, John Crawford around 1643. His father was later killed in Bacon's Rebellion of 1676.

Crawford amassed many acres of land and owned a large plantation that eventually became the site of Richmond, Virginia. On April 2, 1692 he was elected to the House of Burgesses as one of two representatives from New Kent County, Virginia for two years. He introduced a piece of legislation, requiring that County Clerks maintain an office in their respective County Courthouse.

As an elderly man he was killed by some Pamunkey Indians in 1710 in New Kent County, Virginia. Note: The site of David Crawford's fortified home was excavated in 2010.

A record exists naming David Crawford's underage grandson, David Holt (1685-1749). However, it is not known which daughter of David Crawford was David Holt's mother. Some Crawford researchers don't acknowledge David Holt as a grandson.

According to Crawford researcher Bob Chope, David Crawford's children included: 1) Elizabeth, b. about 1650-54; married Nicholas Meriwether 2) Judith, b. 1658; married Robert Lewis and removed to the South 3) Angelina, b. 1660; married William McGuire and removed South 4) Captain David, b. 1662; d. September 1762; married Elizabeth Smith in 1695 5) John b. ? ; d. December 13, 1689; wife unknown.

David Holt married Margaret Dibdall, daughter of John. They had at least eight children. Two John and william became mayors of Williamsburg.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 30 2020, 8:42:08 UTC
