About David Johnston McDaniel
Johnson McDaniel, was William's eldest son. He died in
the late fall of 1776 on the Tennessee River. He was part of Colonel
William Christian's campaign against the Cherokee Indians who were
being aided and encouraged by the British to harrass the American
settlers in what is now upper East Tennessee. The campaign started on
the Long Island of the Holstein River (now Kingsport, TN) in Sept. 1776
and continued down river but met no resistance. The soldiers burned
empty villages along the way and then returned to the Long Island about
Dec. 1776. Johnson's brother, Clement, was also on this campaign and
in his pension deposition stated, "We were in daily and hourly
expectation of any attack and were more than once forced into a line of
battle but after they learned our strength (as we supposed) they fled
to their Towns and carried off their wives and children down the River
in canoes. We marched on, crossed the River at great peril suffering
at the same time from coldness of the night, it being towards the last
of November. We lay near the River for 25 hours. Our troops were
greatly afflicted with the bowel complaint, I myself was very sick and
I lost a brother and many of the troops died when we reached the Towns.
We found them vacated."
The information about Johnson's death in Nov 1776 comes from Clement's
deposition given in Shelby County Court as part of his application for
pension. There is a separate file for the final pension payment for his
widow, Elizabeth. Both came from the National Archives.
