About David Wemyss, 4th Earl of Wemyss

David Wemyss, 4th Earl of Wemyss (29 April 1678 – 15 March 1720) son of James Wemyss, Lord Burntisland and Margaret Wemyss, 3rd Countess of Wemyss (1659–1705).

In his 41 years Earl Wemyss married three times:

(13 August 1697) Lady Anne Douglas (d. 23 February 1700), the only daughter of William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, two sons, David, Lord Elcho (d. 1715), and James (1699–1756), who became 5th Earl of Wemyss (5 January 1709) at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London Mary Robinson (d. 1711/12), daughter of Sir John Robinson (July 1716) Elizabeth St. Clair (d. 1721), daughter of Henry, Lord Sinclair; two daughters: Elisabeth, who married William Sutherland, 17th Earl of Sutherland, and Margaret, who married James Stuart, 8th Earl of Moray.

Entered parliament on 28 June 1705, and was the same year sworn of the privy council. He was one of the commissioners for the treaty of Union with England. In 1706 he was appointed High Admiral of Scotland, and this office having been abolished at the Union, he was then constituted Vice Admiral of Scotland.

 David Wemyss, 4th Earl of Wemyss was baptised on 29 April 1678 at Wemyss, Fife, Scotland.1 He was the son of Sir James Wemyss, Lord Burntisland and Margaret Wemyss, Countess of Wemyss. He married, firstly, Lady Anne Douglas, daughter of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Queensberry and Lady Isabel Douglas, circa 13 August 1697.2 He married, secondly, Mary Robinson, daughter of Sir John Robinson, on 5 January 1708. He married, thirdly, Elizabeth St. Clair, daughter of Henry St. Clair, 1st/10th Lord Sinclair and Grizel Cockburn, circa 5 July 1716.3 He died on 15 March 1720 at age 41.
    He gained the title of 4th Earl of Wemyss.
