About Dea. Joseph Perkins, Sr.

10 Joseph (Jacob2, John1) was born in Ipswich, Mass., June 21, 1674. He removed to Norwich, Conn., in early life and married there Martha, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Morgan, May 22, 1700. She was of Preston, Conn., born 1680, and died Oct., 1754.

He died in Norwich, Conn., Sept. 6, 1726.

At the time of his removal from Ipswich, Mass., he was accompanied by two of his brothers, Jabez and Matthew. Matthew soon returned to Ipswich. Joseph and Jabez purchased a large tract of land (800 or 1,200 acres) for œ70. This land was situated in the forks of the Quinebaug and Shetucket rivers, in that part of the town of Norwich which became afterward the town of Lisbon and was known as "Perkins' Crotch." This land remained in the family until 1804-1820.

Joseph Perkins was an influential man, both in the town and church; by the latter he was elected a deacon, and is distinguished by his descendants as "Deacon Joseph Perkins."

Actors Humphrey Bogart and Anthony Perkins, dancer/choreographer Martha Graham, and George Washington Ferris, the inventor of the Ferris Wheel, are descendants.

WARNING: The identity of Joseph’s mother is in dispute, some show her as Damaris Robinson or Elizabeth Lovell. Some show Joseph died in Norwich, CT.

!He and his brothers Jabez and Matthew came from Ipswich, MA and bought

from John Fitch (deed dated 28 Sep 1695) 1200 acres lying in the forks of

the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers in the town of Norwich. This was in the

part of Norwich afterwards the town of Lisbon, in the southern portion of it,

known as Newent Society (supposedly named from Newent, Gloucestershire, England,

from the neighborhood of which their grandfather John apparently came) and in

the locality afterwards known as Perkins' Crotch from its situation and owners.

This property remained in the family until 1804/1820 during which it was

alienated. [Gen. of CT Fam.]

Disputed Associations ==In 1947, Thomas Allen Perkins called Jacob Perkins' first wife, Elizabeth Lovell, daughter of Thomas Lovell.≤ref name="JPW" /> These associations found their way to Edmund West's Family Data Collection (see references, Our Family History), and the claim has been widely shared.
