About Dea. William Gaylord, Jr.

William Gaylord Jr. was baptized on 28 December 1617 in Crewkerne, Somerset, England.1 He was the son of Deacon William Gaylord and (__?__) (__?__).

He emigrated along with his family on the Mary and John 1630, sailing on March 20th,1630. They sailed from Plymouth, England with 140 passengers aboard. The families and passengers were recruited by the Reverend John White of Dorchester, Dorset. Nearly all of the Mary and John 1630 passengers came from the West Country counties. The ship landed in what is now known as Dorchester, Massachusetts on May 30th, 1630, two weeks before the Winthrop Fleet arrived. The passengers of the Mary and John 1630 founded one of the first towns in New England, Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1630 and they also founded the town of Windsor, Connecticut five years later in 1635.

William married (1), at age 26, Ann Porter, age 22, daughter of John Porter and Anna White, on 24 February 1643/44 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..2

He married (2), at age 35, Elizabeth Drake, daughter of John Drake and Elizabeth(?) (__?__), on 9 February 1653 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..3

He died on 14 December 1656 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn., at age 38.4

William Gaylord, Jr. came to Dorchester on the "Mary and John" with his father in 1630. He had an original grant of a home-lot 18 rods wide in Windsor and his name is found, along with his fathers, on the Founders Monument in Windsor. In 1654 it is noted that William Gaylord, the younger, was a joint purchaser with his father and brother, John, in a parcel that was John Warham's, on the East side of the Great River.

William married Ann Porter in 1644 who died in 1653 leaving William with 5 small children.

A short time later, William married Elizabeth Drake with whom he had two more children.

William died in 1656 at the young age of 38 leaving his relatively new bride with seven children ranging in age from 11 years to the youngest, Nathaniel, who was only fifteen weeks old at the death of their father.

Four years later, his widow married John Elderkin.

William's estate was inventoried at £423-00-09 and £383-06-06 after all debts were paid. Because of the young age of his children, his estate wasn't distributed to the widow and children until 1673, 17 years after his death.

Immigration: on 30 May 1630, of Crewkerne, Somerset, England, arrived at Drochester on the "Mary & John."

Founder/Proprietor: Windsor, 1636.

Biography

Immigrated on the Mary and John in 1630 ===: William Gaylord, Jr. was about twelve years old when he sailed from England on the "Mary and John" with his parents and siblings in 1630.<ref>Early New England Families, 1641-1700, page 1</ref> The ship Mary and John was the first ship with settlers coming into Massachusetts Bay. Later ships of the Winthrop Fleet dropped settlers all around the bay, including the location that became Boston, Massachusetts. William and his family were among the 130 people who were planted at what became Dorchester, Massachusetts. The sufferings they experienced that first year, of which exposure to the elements, hunger, disease and malnutrition were but a part, are unfamiliar to us today.

: Dorchester prospered so rapidly, that by 1636 there was a dearth of available pasture for their cattle and horses. A group from the town ventured across the wilderness to a location scouted for them earlier, and established Windsor, Connecticut, on the great Connecticut River. The Gaylord family was in that group of intrepid farmers. : William Gaylord (Jr.) had an original grant of a home-lot 18 rods wide in Windsor and his name is found, along with his father's name, on the Founders Monument in Windsor. In 1654 it is noted that William Gaylord, the younger, was a joint purchaser with his father and brother, John, in a parcel that was John Warham's, on the East side of the Great River. : William married at Windsor, Connecticut, Ann Porter 24 Feb 1641/2,<ref name=GMB/> who died in 1653 leaving William with 5 small children. A short time later, 9 Feb 1653/4, William married Elizabeth Drake at Windsor, <ref name=GMB/> with whom he had two more children.
