About Deacon John Harmon
Col. Johnson Harmon and his brother, Deacon John Harmon, who as boys, had passed through the scenes of that frightful carnage, at the hands of the Indians, when York was destroyed in 1692. John Harmon, the father of these boys, lived in one of the four best garrison houses in the town, and the inhabitants, who were not killed, escaped into these houses. These Harmons were born fighters and leaders of men, and they became famous for their ser- vices in the early Indian and French wars. In 1711 Capt. Harmon's family garrison at York, with 30 souls, was reviewed by the order of the governor.
