About Deacon Joseph Tilden
Joseph Tilden came from England on the Hercules in 1635 with his father
Joseph in Scituate readily took up church activities of his father. He married Elizabeth (Ellice) Twisdsen and made a new home near the First Herring brook and the mill he erected there. He had already succeeded to the major part of lands owned by his father in Marshfied and Scituate and began acquistion of large tracts himself. He became one of the largest individual landoners in the Colony. His business at the mill was large; its product conveyed to Boston by water.1841
His will is printed in MD 18(3):186. He names all childen and has their bequest payable when the sons reach age 21, daughters age 21 or earlier marriage. First born son, Nathaniel would have been age 20
In 1669 Joseph sued Charles Stockbridge for ��1000 for slander “for saying and Nathaniel Turner and Jospeh Turner could kisse Elizabeth [his wife] as ofte they listed” NEHGR 133:190
