Named as Lydia in the will of her second husband, Timothy Hatherly, dated Sept 1664.
Many LDS Ancestral Files seem to have her as Lydia Bourne, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. No hint of a standard source seems to exist. This is certainly incorrect because Lydia was born in about the same year as her alleged father Thomas Bourne.
Lydia Huckstep
Lydia was born abt. 1587 in Tenterden, Kent, England and died in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. She married Nathaniel Tilden abt. 1606 in Tenterden, Kent, England. He was born 7/28/1583 in Tenterden, Kent, England and died on 5/25/1641 in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was buried in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The 2 known children of Lydia Huckstep and Nathaniel Tilden are:
Lydia had cousins, Thomas and William Hatch and Elizabeth Hatch Sean Stockbridge who also came to New England in the Hercules and settled in Scituate.
She was a widow when she married Timothy Hatherly.
1587 - Lidia Hucstepp, Daught. of Steve Hucsteppe bapt. ye 11th of february" [1587-8]. She married Nathaniel Tilden and emigrated with him to New England 1635. -- NEHGR 1913, p. 47.
Lydia married secondly Timothy Hatherly. Timothy Hatherly died 24 October 1666. His will, dated 12 December 1664, proved 30 October 1666, named his wife Lydia (widow of Nathaniel Tilden); Edward Jenkins, his wife and children (his niece's family); Nicholas Wade, his wife and children (another niece's family); Susanna, wife of William Brooks, and children (niece); Timothy and Elizabeth Foster (niece's children); Thomas Hanford (nephew); Fear, the wife of Samuel Baker, and the other three children of Isaac Robinson, John, Isaac, and Mercy (children of a deceased niece); Lydia Garrett, his wife's daughter, and her four children; George Sutton, his wife and children; the wife of William Bassett, his wife's daughter; widow Preble, his wife's daughter; Lydia Lapham; Thomas Lapham; Stephen Tilden; Nicholas Baker; "my man Thomas Savory"; and Lydia Hatch, daughter of William Hatch; with his friend Joseph Tilden as executor (MD 16:158). (Plymouth Colony, by Eugene Aubrey Stratton).
From Family Search
He [Nathaniel Tilden] died in 1641, with a will dated 25 May 1641. Under the will, he devised a house in Tenterden, Kent to his wife Lydia and made bequests to his wife; to sons Joseph, Thomas and Stephen; to daughters Judith, Mary, Sarah and Lydia; and to servants Edward Cinkins and Edward Tarse. . The inventory taken on 31 Jul 1641, which was untotalled and did not include any real estate in the the Plymouth Colony, did included "ten stocks or swarms of bees," perhaps the earliest notice of the keeping of bees in the Plymouth Colony.
His widow Lydia subsequently married his friend, Timothy Hatherly.
Children who survived to come to New England:
The 1664 will of Thomas Bourne had been misinterpreted, and gave genealogists the impression there had been a (fictional) daughter Lydia Bourne who married either the Elder Nathaniel Bourne or his (fictional) son Nathaniel Tilden ll.
The expression "my Daughter Tildin: Daughter Lydia Tildin" means, and perhaps should be read, "my daughter Tildin's daughter Lydia Tildin," in other words, his granddaughter Lydia, child of his daughter Elizabeth (Bourne) (Waterman) Tilden; and it will be noted that Elizabeth's four Waterman boys were given legacies in the same paragraph immediately following Lydia's legacy. The ambiguity of the Tilden clause has caused many genealogists to conclude that Thomas Bourne had a daughter Lydia, but care-, ful study of the records fails to substantiate the existence of such a daughter.
Therefore -
- Lydia Bourne did not exist (she was her sister Elizabeth)
- Nathaniel Tilden Jr did not exist (he was his brother Thomas, who married Elizabeth (Bourne), widow Waterman)
