Biography

Simon Stone, son of Simon Stone and Mary Whipple, was born 8 Sep 1656 at the Stone homestead at Mount Auburn in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay.[1]

Simon served in King Philip's War, credited for service under Captain Syll/Sill, 24 June 1676, and for service in King William's War. A few years later, Simon Stone moved to Groton, Massachusetts, a town in which his father and Matthias Farnsworth were original proprietors.[1]

He married Sarah Farnsworth, daughter of Matthias Farnsworth and Mary Farr Farnsworth, about 1685, probably in Groton and the couple had ten children born in Groton:[1]

Simon, b. 1 Aug 1686; Sarah, b. 1688, m. Stephen Farr 1708, 4+ ch.; Abigail, b. 1690, m. Nathaniel Holden 1718/9, 7 ch.; Mary, b. 1692, m. Abraham Whitney c 1714, 6 ch.; Susanna, b. 23 Oct 1694, m. Jacob Chamberlain c 1718, 8 ch.; Isaac, b. 4 May 1697, d. 30 Sep 1723 unm.; Hannah, b. 1699, d. 27 Sep 1723 unm,; Joseph, b. 8 Mar 1701/2; Benjamin, b. 12 Aug 1706; Lydia, b. c 1708, d. 30 Sep 1723 unm. Simon was elected a deacon in the Groton church on 22 Apr 1715, was a prosperous farmer and in 1706, was representative to the Massachusetts General Court.[1] He was elected to many local and state offices: constable, surveyor of highways, and frequent turns as selectman.

During his lifetime, he distributed his estate among his children, so he left no will. Deacon Simon Stone died in Groton, Massachusetts 19 Dec 1741 at 85 years of age.[2] He was buried in the Old Burying Ground in Groton, and his headstone reads: Here Lies Buried | Body of Deacn | Simon Stone | Who Departed | This Life | Decembr ye 19th | A. D. 1741 | Age 85 Years | 3M & 11 D.[1]

Research Note

Removed Sarah Nutting as wife. Simon married Sarah Farnsworth, daughter of Matthias Farnsworth and Mary Farr. Sarah Nutting married, first, Matthias Farnsworth, son of Matthias Farnsworth and Mary Farr. After Matthias' death in 1698, she married John Stone.[3] The two women, Sarah Farnsworth and Sarah (Nutting) Farnsworth, have frequently been confused.
