Thomas's oldest son was also named Thomas (1680-1756), and he continued the family's residence in Newbury. With this Thomas we have the first sign of piety in the family; he was named a deacon--a member of the governing council--of the Second Church of Newbury and helped to organize the Fourth Parish Church of Newbury, of which he was also a deacon. As such, he would have been a prominent man in town.[6]

Biography

Dea. Thomas Chase was born at Newbury, Massachusetts, 15 Sep 1680, the son of Thomas Chase and Rebecca Follansbee; [1] [2] [3] [4] died at Newbury, in that part later set off as West Newbury, 10 Feb 1756, [5] "in his 76th year", and is buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery at West Newbury. [6] [7] He married, before 20 Nov 1700 (birth of first known child), Sarah Stevens, [8] [9] born at Amesbury, Massachusetts, 26 Aug 1679 (FindAGrave), the daughter of Dea. Thomas Stevens and Martha Bartlett. [10] She died at Newbury, in that part later set off as West Newbury, 25 Oct 1760, "in her 81st year", [11] and was buried with her husband in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. [12] [13]

From Aquila Chase and His Descendants: [14]

He had a deed of 34 acres in "the Upper Woods" from his father, 3 Jun 1700, and settled on lot No. 145, which, with additions, is now owned by his descendants, the Thurlows, proprietors of the widely-known Cherry Hill Nurseries.

He and his wife were admitted to the Second Church of Newbury, 10 Sep 1705, and he was chosen a deacon, 21 Jan 1725/26. The Fourth Parish was organized, 5 Sep 1731, and he was one of the original signers of the covenant. He then became a deacon of the Fourth Parish Church. This was in what is now West Newbury.

In his will, dated 10 Dec 1748, proved 1 Mar 1756, he mentions his widow, his sons, Abel, Roger, Ezekiel and Josiah, his daughter, Abigail Emery, and his granddaughters, Martha and Sarah Bartlett. His son, Thomas, was to be executor and residuary legatee. He referred to his carpenter's tools, his weaver's tools, and to "his clock which is now in the house, made by David Blasdell of Amesbury."[15]
