About Deborah Barnes

Not the same as Jane Dix & not the wife of Edward Dix of Watertown, nor was she their daughter.

Disambiguation

There WAS a Deborah Unknown Dix who as a widow with three young children moved to Connecticut where she married Robert Barnes but she WAS NOT the "widow" of Edward Dix of Watertown, and there is only one Edward Dix of Watertown identified (and he WAS NOT the 19-year old immigrant to Virginia on the "Thomas & John" before anybody starts thinking in that direction. Anderson in "Great Migration" has thoroughly differentiated those two men.

Edward [SIC - UNKNOWN] Dix and his wife, Deborah, came from England and settled at Watertown, Massachusetts. They were in the fleet with Governor Winthrop, in 1630. He appears to have died at that place, prior to the removal of his immediate family into Connecticut, leaving a widow and three children. The widow, Deborah, married (second) October 16, 1667, Richard Barnes, of Marlboro, Massachusetts, by whom she had five children, between 1669 and 1683, according to certain published records; but the dates seem somewhat averse to the fact.

The birth and parentage of Deborah Dix are unknown. Some sources say that she was the widow of Edward Dix of Watertown,[1] with some going so far as to say that she arrived from England with Edward in 1630.[2][3] This is clearly impossible, since those same sources note that she had a child by her second husband Richard Barnes as late as 1683, when she would have been nearly 70 (at least) if she had been married to Edward in 1630. Edward's first wife, and the mother of his four children, as shown by the vital records of Watertown, was named Jane; and his widow's name, shown in court records, was Susanna (see Edward's profile for details and sources).

Other sources say that Deborah was the daughter of Edward and Jane Dix.[4][5] This idea may have originated with Bond.[6] Although Bond shows convincingly that Deborah could not be the daughter of Edward Dix in the second edition of his work,[7] she has continued to be identified as his daughter in many subsequent texts.

Both Bond[7] and Savage[8] conclude that Deborah was a widow when she married Richard, with the identity of her first husband unknown. One source identifies her first husband as Leonard Dix.[9]
