MR. SHRIVER DIES AT HOME IN COUNTY
Leaves Many Descendants To Mourn Their Loss.
Mr. Denton Shriver, one of the best known residents of that section of the county, died at his home about a mile and a half west of Providence Church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The deceased had been ill in bed but five weeks and prior to that he had enjoyed remarkable health. For a man of his years he had been unusually active and sturdy. Even as late as last summer the venerable octogenarian had been capable of doing a real man's work in his fields.
Mr. Shriver was born 87 years ago at the same place he died and spent his life on the Shriver homestead which has been in the family for a number of generations. He lived a long and honorable life and was esteemed and venerated by all who knew him. In many respects he was an exceptional man, for one thing never having tasted intoxicating liquors or used tobacco in any form. Kind hearted and generous it was not a difficult manner for him to make friendships and hold them. During the war he served in the Confederate army, escaping unscathed, while a younger brother was unfortunate enough to be killed in battle practically by his side.
Mr. Shriver married a Miss Corder early in life, who preceded him to the grave some twenty years ago. He was the father of thirteen children, six boys and seven girls, two of these are dead and the survivors are as follows: Mrs. Janes Kees, at home; Mrs Edgar Butts, Mrs. Benjamin Plotner, near that community; Mrs. Alice Damon, of Fostoria, O.; Mrs. Irene Hestler, of Willard, O.; Mrs. Benjamin Smith, Mrs. Frank Brown, Norman Shriver, of Washington; Lewis Shriver, of Johnsontown; Mr. Samual Shriver, residing on the Williamsport pike at the edge of town, and Leonard Shriver, of Virginia avenue. One brother, Samuel, also residing at the home place, survives as well as at least 50 or 60 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
The deceased was long a member of the United Brethren church and the last sad rites will be held in that church at Providence Saturday morning. Friends and relatives will meet at the house at 10 o'clock and proceed to the church. The interment will be made in the adjacent graveyard.
