OPUNAKE QUEEN CARNIVAL
Social functions in furtherance of the candidature of the various candidates in the Queen Carnival are proving popular. The euchre party and dance held by the town committee last week drew a large attendance in spite of the unfavourable night.
Stormy weather also prevailed on Wednesday night for the juvenile ball arranged by the Hibernian committee, nevertheless there was a full attendance and a most enjoyable evening resulted.
Prizes for the best fancy dress were awarded to Miss Mavis Lyttle as "Balloon Girl" and Master Denis Loesch as "Gollywog." Miss Anulty Pulford and Master M. Dudley were awarded prices for the best juvenile dancers. The latest progress report of the voting in the contest places the Maori candidate well in the lead, the voting being:. Maori candidate, 113,800; town candidate, 5400; Hibernian candidate, 4248; farmers' candidate, 2920. The total moneys handed in to. the carnival secretary to date is just on £300.
