About Desmond William Garland

Biography
Desmond William Garland was born, February 9th 1916, at Ballinacorr, Co.Wicklow, one of four brothers who had one sister. His father was a doctor, who had previously spent much of his working life in the British Colonial Service, a Medical Officer on the Gold Coast, West Africa. Dr. Garland had a medical practice in London and later in County Wicklow. Desmond William Garland was educated at the Cardinal Vaughan School in Kensington, London, as had been Donald, his young brother.
Desmond Garland gained his 'wings' with the R.A.F. at the outbreak of War, but was then invalided out of the service on medical grounds. Enlisting in the RASC as a private Desmond eventually transferred back to the R.A.F. as a pilot again. Extracts from R.A.F. Lists relating to 1939 [Sept. & Dec.] confirming Commission & his subsequent relinquishment are sources.
RAF Sqn. 50, Group 5: Avro Manchester 1 R 5833. DWG -of which P/O Desmond Garland, R.A.F Volunteer Reserve Service No. 115223 was the Captain took off at 22 27 from RAF Base, Swinderby, which was located to the South East of Lincoln, a short distance from No. 50 Sq's base, Skellingthorpe. The Manchester flew on a mission to lay mines in the vicinity of Quiberon, Brittany, France. The plane was hit by enemy fire and lost over the sea off the Quiberon Peninsula. Certain Recds. refer to the date for the Aircraft's loss and Desmond's death as the 5th. However, P/O Gill (RAF), the surviving crew member was taken P.O.W. and detained in Stalag Luft III. He recounted how, “the aircraft was shot down on 6th June and crashed into the sea off the French coast near Lorient. It hit the water and .. [he recalled] .. I remember nothing until I came to the surface and found blazing petrol on the water. No one else was to be seen. The Germans .. [later] .. told me there was only one survivor”. German documents stated that all were killed on 6 June, but the location of any graves was not stated. In 1948 it was officially concluded the missing crew members had lost their lives at sea.

Avro Manchester 1 R 5833 Plt/O Desmond Garland took off from RAF Swinderby at 22 27 hrs; a mission to lay mines at 'Gorse' [code name for Quiberon Bay, Brittany]. The precise time the aircraft was shot down may never be known, the evidence -incl. replies to the POW Questionnaire fro. F/Lt. Reginald T. Investigation later concluding the aircraft encountered enemy fire near to or off the French coast near Lorient and came down into the sea.
