From Barver, Diepholz in Germany. Arrived at the Cape as a sailor aboard the Borselen.
Info by De Villiers & Pama that he was from Barby, Anhalt, Germany, proved wrong in 1990's when it appeared that the hamlet Oldewage (or Olwage), near the town Barver (near Diepholz in Lower Saxony) still existed and was still populated by Oldewages. Barver (written Barber in Detlef's marriage register) was wrongly interpreted by Pama et al. as being BarBY.
Dutch East-Indian Company (VOC) documents also state clearly that he was from Diepholz (Tiefhout, even Tiffert), which today is the main town of Kreis Diepholz in which the town Barver is situated.

IMPORTANT:
To the Managers of Detlef Christian Ollewagen, SV/PROG:

I have loaded an old map of the world in Lower Saxony, Germany,. from whence Detlef Chistian came to the Cape, into the space reserved for.his profile picture (because no such picture could exist, of course!) The map was given to me by the late Fritz Oldewage of Barver in Lower Saxony. It was compiled about the same time that Detlef Christian lived there before he joined the Dutch East Indian Company and eventually settled in the Cape Overberg region.
The map shows the hamlet Gross OLWAGE near Barver.
It becomes clear in the Cape Town archives that Detlef Christian signed his name with a cross. His sons, however, signed their surname OLWAGE, or at least three of the five sons.
Gross Olwage in Germany in time became the small Barver "suburb" OLDEWAGE and all the German "Ollies" bear the surname OLDEWAGE today.
However in South Africa the descendants of Detlef adopted at least six divergent spellings of the surname, namely Olwage, OlwageN, OLLEwageN, OLLEwage, OLDERwageN and OLDEwage.
The conclusion is that it is wrong to write Detlef Christian;and his sons' surname as OLLEWAGEN as it is done at present. It should be OLWAGE or at least OLDEWAGE.
I have researched the Olwage history thoroughly in the 1990s and witten a book about it (Title: Die Ollies van Suidelike Afrika, ISBN 0-620-19979-2)
Because this is the profile of a Progenitor or Stamvader, I am hesitant to make very important corrections such as these myself.
Could manager(s) please, please make the changes the sake of accuracy?
Sincerely,
