Dietlof and his brother Fritz belonged to the same commando under Field-cornet Melt Marais . They left for the Natal boundary on 30 September 1899 . The first battle they fought was the Battle of Talana Hill , Dundee . On April 3 , 1901 Dietlof was captured by the English and on 6 May 1901 he was on board the ship "Manila" together with 490 other prisoners of war on their way to India . During 1901 while held prisoner at Ahmednagar , he wrote the book "On Commando"
