 Estate Martena State is a historical place in Friesland, the history here goes back a long way.  Around 1400 Sytze Martena lived here. In the centuries that followed remained the lock held by the Martena's. 

The last occupant of the original lock was Esquire Duco Martena of Burmania Vegelin of Claerbergen. This carried the old state at the end of the nineteenth century at the Reformed Church in Koarnjum. It decided to demolish in 1899 Martena State, because of the dilapidated state it.
Architect Willem Cornelis de Groot Leeuwarden built the current slot, idyllically situated on an island in the park pond. The centerpiece of the miniature castle in neo-Renaissance style is undoubtedly the 'sipel, the onion-shaped roof of the tower. The church now has Martena State given in leasehold to the Foundation Martena State and enjoys protected status as a national monument.

The old burial mound of Martena State is definitely worth a visit. The mound has remained over the centuries completely intact, something not common in Friesland. On the mound, you can find the family tomb of family Vegelin of Claerbergen. The mound is the east side of the nature campsite, surrounded by several monumental beech.
