Henry Clay Rambo lived in the Warner Valley, Lake County, Oregon, near Plush. His ranch was northeast of Push on the way to Hart Mountain. He also owned land on Hart Mountain.
He married Maude Anderson in Alturas CA, but I believe they were later divorced. He was in the Warner Valley by 1877. I believe his father was Joel Rambo, and that Henry Clay was born in Siskiyou County CA. He went by the name Clay. I'm not related, I'm just interested in Lake County history.

I would like to find an author who will help me create a book about many stories from my Nana and dad that were told to me when they lived in Plush.
Here is information of the Rambos you may be interested in that was sent to me:
Do you have your families 1928 roll applications from Betty? I have one from your Dad's grandfathers cousin Godfrey Joel Rambo. It shows that his Grandmother was O'Tishwiter (o-tis-we-tah) is how I have heard it said. She was the daughter of Chief Tolo, from what I have read. It would fit with the timeline, as the furtrappers often married the Chief's daughters for political reasons. And Francis Picard was a trapper if I remember correctly. There are alot of people with the Doke Group who are related to you through O'Tishwiter.

Subject: [Klamath,Or] family on the Fairchild Ranch
Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 22:30:39 -0700
I was told my one cousin that my great grandmother had her first 5 children on the Fairchild Ranch, but my Mom said her mother told her that she was born in Keno, which isn't too far from there.
Keno was first called "Whittle's Ferry", named after my gg-grandfather, Robert Whittle. He fished and hunted up and down the Klamath River and sold fish and venison to the miners and also in Yreka. He also had a ferry across the Klamath. He loved to play cribbage, and had regulars that came by to play. The stage coaches stopped there, also. It is about 18 miles southwest of Klamath Falls (Linkville).
When the Modocs left the Klamath Indian Reservation and went to the Lava Beds, they needed an interpreter. They sent for my gg-grandparents, Robert and Matilda Whittle. Matilda spoke Klamath, Modoc and English. Matilda's brother, Link River Jack, was friends with Captain Jack. Captain Jack knew Matilda could be trusted. She made many trips to talk to Captain Jack, before Winema came into the picture. Matilda and Winema were both at the meeting when General Canby was shot and killed. Canby was the only General killed in an Indian War. Robert and Matilda left after he was killed, they knew what was to come and no interpreting would stop it. My great Aunt Alice told me that Matilda's name in Klamath ment "Frog leaps my back", (as close to interpeting as possible).
Finding records for the Klamath area is still in the infant stage, so check the surrounding counties. My great grandparents, Lewis Asbury Allen and Mary Elvira Whittle lived on the Fairchild Ranch, but there marriage was recorded in Lakeview, Lake County, Oregon. That is the county to the east of Klamath County, and it was before Klamath County was formed. My gg-grandparents, Matilda and Robert Whittle, were married in Oregon, but in later years, they were told (and so were many others), that their marriage wasn't legal; so they went to Yreka, Siskiyou County, Calif. and remarried. My grandmother, Grace Allen was married in Yreka also. I don't know if it had something to do with them being Indian or not, but a lot of people went down there to marry. I have found many family members of 3 different lines listed on the Siskiyou County website.
I have a picture of Matilda Whittle holding up a flag; it has 45 stars on it. She was quite elderly in the picture.
My grandfather's family lived in the Siskiyou County and Klamath County country, they are the Rambo's. My grandfather was Godfrey Joel Rambo, his father was Joel Maxwell Rambo, his mother was Caroline Picard, who was 1/2 Shasta Indian. Caroline's father was Henry Francis Picard, who also lived along the Klamath River in Siskiyou County, Calf. Henry Francis Picard was born in 1829 in St. Louis, Mo. After the death of H. Francis Picard's wife [daughter of Chief Tato], in childbirth; Francis married Caroline Whittle, also daughter of Robert Whittle and his first [unknown] wife. Robert Whittle and Francis Picard were friends, and were born the same year, 1829. Francis Picard was a Hudson Bay Trapper when he first came to Siskiyou County, Calif., so the story goes.
Have a great day,

David Allen Cox who wrote this post Feb 2003 was my father. I say was because dad died March 28, 2005. This was my son Jesse Solomon Mathews birthday! That following November 19, 2005 my oldest brother Bruce Allen Cox died of a massive heart attack; my oldest daughter's birthday, Rose Lanaye Mathews (1977)! Then this past year, August 2009, my second oldest brother Mark was found hung by the neck in an abandoned building! Thereafter, Thanksgiving 2009, my mommy Lillie Marie Shelton died of a stroke! My baby sister, Alicia Imogene Cox returned from Islamabad in August 2002 and was found dead at the Fairfield Inn CA which seemed to bring on the "Reaper" Now, only my younger brother David Cox Jr. and I are left. I have 5 children-Rose (32), Jennifer (31), Sara (28), and Jesse Solomon (24) and Camille (13). They are all doing good! Jesse plays the trumpet and piano around teaching music. Jennifer is a jet-setter, Rose works at a Bohemian Tea House, and Sara is married and works in physical training. Our family mostly went from riches to rags and now seems to be on the upswing again, financially. I haven't seen the rest of my family since I went into the Navy Hospital Corp in 1976 (used to be close until Nana died in 1984). Hopefully, all will remain true to our faith in the Lord!
I do know that Henry Clay Rambeau is listed in the index of "Burnt Out Fires" by Dillon. The fact that our govt informed Nana to enroll us with the CA Shasta Splinter Tribe is questionable-Henry Clay Rambeau is stated to be Modoc as stated in Dillon's book. Also, in the 1920s Maude had Clay put on the Modoc census (Debbie Riddle Herrera, Winema's descendant and our 2nd cousin) has this census. Thus, our family lost our Federal Recognition as Modoc by deceiving us and having us put on Shasta. Actually, we have the largest surviving Modo/Shasta family. I'm not sure if O'tishwiter was a Modoc chief's daughter or Shasta Chief's but I'm pretty sure that she was Modoc as Marie Wallace's dad was modoc and mom had a modoc father and shasta mom as dad relayed to me.
Take care everyone and all my blessings to each of you!
Love, Cindy

Henry Francis Picard,b. 28 Mar 1829 St. Louis Mo.

I was looking to see if there were ancestors/parents listed for H. Frank Picard. He was a Hudson Bay trapper who came to what was later known as Siskiyou County, California. He was married twice. His first wife unknown name, was a daughter of Chief Tato, of the Shasta Tribe. They had 3 children, Mary Ann, Henry Francis, Jr., and Caroline. Their daughter, Caroline married Joel Maxwell Rambo, and their son, Godfrey Joel Rambo, is my grandfather.
Frank Picard married a second time to Caroline Whittle, daughter of Robert Whittle and Matilda. Matilda was Klamath Indian. Robert and Matilda Whittle are my gg-grandparents through my grandmother, Lily Grace Allen; and she married Godfrey J. Rambo.
I have copies of letters written by Frank Picard's grandson through his second marriage. The letter's are written to my cousin in the late 1960's. It lists the children, some birth dates, and marriage info. It says: Henry Francis Picard, my grandfather, was born 28 March 1829, in St. Louis, Missouri, and was of French decent. He apparently was well educated when young and at one time planned to be a lawyer. He came west about 1849-1850 as a trapper for the Hudson Bay Company and located in the area that later became Siskiyou County. He must have dropped the name of Henry, because he was always called Francis or Frank throughout his life. He first wife was a member of the Shasta Indian Tribe and they had three children, Mary Ann, Henry Francis,Jr., and Caroline."
There is more information scattered through the letters. I am interested in finding out more about his parents and siblings and beyond. There is a woman on Picard forum that says Frank Picard is her gggrandfather, I guess that means gg-grandfather. She states Otiswiter as the first wife. She also states that Frank's parents were Francois Picar, b. abt. 1803 In. and Emille Grimault, b. 10/14/1807. I have contacted her, with no reply.
Do you have any of these people in your database? I have more information concerning Frank Picard and his descendants, written in these letters from his grandson, if you are interested. There is also references to records found in Yreka, Calif. Sandy Garrett Owsley = from Oregon
