About Dorothea Campher

Maternal mtDNA Haplogroup L4b2b based on Jannetjie van Wyk, Jannetje van Wijk, Daughter of Claasje VAN ANGOLA, SM/PROG, 'Maaij' Claesje van Angola, seized from Portuguese slave ship by the 'Amersfoort' in the Gulf of Guinea, possibly Angola in 1658.

Dorothea Oelfse

There is an unsolved query around the existence of "Teùre" (not Fure or Flure) ≈ 19, 10, 1692 but Delia Robertson claims that this baptism is that of the daughter (SAG v7 p41) Dorothea who married Cornelis Campher.

The reasons are outlined below:

At http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g6/p6777.htm see citation 3 for an explanatory note on the name Teure and how it may relate to Dorothea.

In the baptism entry the child is not identified as a daughter - merely a child.

Den 19 8bris aen Stellenbosch een kint gedoopt waer van de vader is Andrijs Oelofse, de moeder Sara Leenderts, tot getuijg[e] stont Roelof Pasman, ende Fijtie Schalk, is genaemt [Flure].

Note from Richard Ball - I have had a look at our copy of the original (handwriting is awful at this period) - the ure is pretty clear - letter before that seems most likely to be an e (though l is a possibility) and the initial letter seems to me very similar to the F starting Fijtie in the same entry - so my guess would be Feure but Mansell Upham's Teure is also a possibility.

b2 Dorothea Oelofse
There is a strong case for the baptism of Fleure/Teure on 19th Jan 1692 being that of Dorothea

The baptism entry of her child Roeloff reflects her name being “Teùre” - http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/e1502.htm

"Roeloff, d'Vader Cornelis Camfer, d'Moeder Teùre [Dorothea]
Oelofse, getn' Hans Conterman en Marta Beijers, 2e Jùly 1724"

Further support for this conclusion:

4 Dorothea Oelofsz : baptized c. 1695; marries 7 January 1709 Cornelis Campher (son of Lorenz Campher (from Mohrow [Pomerania]) & Ansela van de Caep; grandson of Paaij Timoor & Ansela van Timor);

Feure/Teure Oelofse

There is an unsolved query around the existence of this child. SAG v7 have b2 Fure ≈ 19, 10, 1692 but Delia Robertson claims that this baptism is that of the daughter Dorothea who married Cornelia Campher.

Note at http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g6/p6777.htm -

concerning Various early Cape individuals, written by Mansell Upham, January - February 2011 (Personal Library, unknown repository reference) "1692 Den 19 8bris aen Stellenbosch een kint gedoopt waer van de vader is Andrijs Oelofse, de moeder Sara Leenderts, tot getuijg[e] stont Roelof Pasman, ende Fijtie Schalk, is genaemt Teure [My thanks to Mansell Upham for clearing up this transcription and also for pointing out that Teure is possibly a corruption of Thyre - or more conventionally Thyra - that in Danish/Norwegian 'y' is the same as 'u' in Afrikaans -i.e. Thyre pronounced Tuur or Teur - and that although the etymologies may conflict, there is a case to be made for the interchangeability of Dorothea and Thyra in terms of pagan Norsk names surviving in post-Christian Scandinavia.]."

In the light of this it would seem that there is no conclusive evidence that Feure/Teure and Dorothea are the same child; Feure/Teure is included in the GENi tree as b2 and Dorothea remains b3. This can be changed should further evidence come to light.
