Dorothy, daughter of Thomas and Ann Clifton was named for her grandmother, Dorothy Stanley, daughter of Henry, 4th Earl Derby and his acknowledged mistress Jane Halsall of Knowsley. Dorothy Stanley married Cuthbert Clifton, father of Thomas Clifton, Dorothy's father.
"At Westby Hall, they had a private chapel for which license had been granted to their ancestor Richard Clifton in 1444. The chapel became the centre of the Papist part for this area of Kirkham parish. In 1580 Richard Baine, the parish clerk of kirkham, reported that on the 1st Oct Richard haydock, alias Tytmouse, a seminary priest, was in the company of two widows, Mrs. Alice Clifton and Mrs. jane Clifton of Westby.This priest, Dr. Richard Haydock, was a relative of the family, his great-grandfather, Gilbert haydock of Cottam, having married Alice, dauof Robert Clifton of Westby; he was therefore, also a connection by marriage of the family at Mowbreck."
