Dorothy was born, in September 1920, in Halifax County, Virginia, to James Henry Easley and Mary Ellen (Bailey) Easley, the fourth of six children. She was educated in the public schools of Halifax County. Dorothy was baptized in St. Paul's Episcopal Church at an early age. Her devotion to God, and the Episcopal ministry, continued throughout her life. Upon relocating to Richmond, VA, she joined St. Philip's Episcopal Church, then located on Leigh Street, and she remained a devoted member.

She was actively involved in the Richmond Chapter of the NAACP during the struggle for equality in the 1950s and 1960s. She retired, from employment, as a security guard, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, in 1982, after more than 15 years of service.
