About Dorothy Greenham
Identity
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smoot-350
Dorothy Smoot was the daughter of William Smute, Jr. (1633 - 1716) & his 1st wife. [NO]
Dorothy, wife of Thomas Durham and mother of his three youngest children, was the daughter of Mary (Smoot) Gilbert, youngest sister of William Smoot. This relationship is based on speculation as there is no documented proof of this relationship.
It was often speculated that Dorothy was a daughter of William Smoot Jr., who was actually Dorothy's maternal uncle. William Smoot Jr. conveyed property to Dorothy Durham in 1700 "with love and affection." Based on the various records there does appear to be a family relationship of some type. The relationship between Dorothy and William Smoot is based on speculation as there is no documented proof of the relationship.
Various records prove that Dorothy Durham, Thomazin Goodridge, and Alice Chinn were all sisters[11] However, the women are only recorded by their married names. The maiden name has not been proved.[12]
She married Thomas Durham in 1681 in North Farnham, Richmond, Virginia.
To this union 4 children were born:
- John 1684
- Mary 1686-1715
- Thomas 1690-1735
- John 1698-1722
She married 2nd in February 1715 to Jeremiah Greenham (1664-aft 1730)
Disputed Origins
there is a long discussion on whether Dorothy is the d/o James Gilbert and Mary Smoote (sister of William Smoote)
but, 1) William Smoote's will specifically calles out his grandchildren of sil Thomas Durham
2) the 1700 deed to Dorothy Durham and her wife Thomas Durham
3) 1704 deposition that she was born in 1663
4) Thomas Durham mentions wife Dorothy and the children that were mentioned in the 1700 deed from William Smoote
5) therefore due to her age, she could not have been the d/o William Smoote's wife Jane.
There are no Documents which prove that Mary, wife of James Gilbert was a Smoot and there are no documents which prove she was the mother of Dorothy Durham, or Dorothy's sisters, Alice and Thomasin. There was a family relationship of some type but there are no Documents which prove what the relationship was. See: https://dna-explained.com/2017/06/25/dorothy-durhams-parents-and-th...
