About Dorothy Brewer Lane
Hagerstown - Services were be held Wednesday for former Maryland first lady DOROTHY BYRON LANE. She died Friday at age 96 of congestive heart failure at her home in Hagerstown.
Her husband, William Preston Lane, Jr., a Democrat, served as attorney general from 1932 to 1936 and as governor from 1947 to 1951. Mr. Lane had promised to bring the state together with a bridge across the Chesapeake Bay. The bridge's first span, completed in 1952, was names for him after his death in 1967. In June 1973, Mrs. Lane cut the ribbon on the bridge's second span.
Born in Mercersburg, Pa., her family moved to Hagerstown when she was 2. She grew up across the street from Mr. Lane, whom she married in 1922.
Family members described her as a fastidious hostess who personally failed vases in the 35 room governor's mansion with fresh flowers every day and arranged meals for throngs of last minute dinner guest.
