About Dowie Vander Schaaf

Dowie VanDer Schaaf, aged 87, of Hudsonville, went home to his Savior Wednesday, August 13, 2008.

His three sisters, Jeanette VanDer Schaaf, Margaret Van Engen, and Gerdina Van Maanen preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife Delia and children Peter and Dorothy VanDer Schaaf of Jenison, Gary and Karen VanDer Schaaf of Wyoming, MI. There are twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, one brother-in-law Tom Van Maanen, and many nieces and nephews.

Dowie was born in 1921 in Edgerton, Minnesota, and was raised in Hull, Iowa.

He was a combat veteran of WWII, serving four years in the United States Navy.

He married Delia Brummel in 1949, and lived in Newaygo, Michigan, Hull, Iowa, and since 1960 in Grand Rapids and Hudsonville, Michigan.

He served many years as an office-bearer and school board member in area Protestant Reformed churches and schools.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Hudsonville Protestant Reformed Church with Rev. Garrett Eriks officiating. Interment Georgetown Cemetery.

Friends may meet with the family at the VanderLaan Funeral Home Friday 5 - 8 p.m. Memorial gifts may be given to the Protestant Reformed Christian School of your choice.
