About Dr. Charles Augustus Wentworth, SV/PROG

Dr Charles Wentworth went to South Africa as a young man with the 1820 Settlers on The Duke of Marlborough, sailing from Portsmouth as an 'individual settler' (not part of a recognised party) to be the House Surgeon to Lord Charles Somerset after the departure of Dr James Barry.

He later practiced at Uitenhage where he met his wife, a daughter of one of the 1820 Settlers.

  • not an official 1820 'transport', arrived in 1820 and those on board, I think, were given land under similar circumstances to the other Settlers.
  • ... supposed to be a descendant of the Earl of Strafford (thanks, William!)
  • ... married Mary Ann Lewis Wernich (possibly nee Wernich?) in Cape Town in 1821 and divorced her in 1830.
  • ... In 1831, he married Eliza nee Dalgairns, an 1820 family
  • Two of his daughters by her later married into the Rex family of Melkhout Kraal, Knysna.
  • ... committed suicide in 1834, leaving Eliza to bring up a very young family. She moved to Knysna and established a school there with the help of her two unmarried sisters, Magdalen and Agnes Dalgairns - these three ladies had a profound influence on education at Knysna in those days.
