About Dr. Elijah Baldwin

ELIJAH6, Elijah5, David4, Timothy3, Benjamin2, Henry1

Elijah Baldwin Jr., son of Elijah Baldwin Sr. and Hannah Bishop Burnham, was b. in Canterbury, Conn. on Oct. 26,1820; m. Oct. 14,1845, with SARAH HARRIS MATHEWSON, dau. Bucklin Mathewson, of Lisbon, Conn. He graduated Yale in 1841; received his medical degree from Harvard in 1845; a doctor; practicing at first in Plainfield, Conn and then removing, in 1855, to South Canterbury, Conn; living near his father with his family, and said to be the only Baldwin of this line in the vicinity.

Elijah and his wife Sarah maintained correspondences between themselves and their children from 1865 to 1878. These letters (see source below) provide insight into the concerns of a mother about her children's deportment, health, studies, and clothes. She also conveys her emotions on having her children leave the farm and frequently gives moral advice. Among Eliijah's letters are those to C.S. Brainerd, a former classmate, with who he exchanges thoughts about science and philosophy.Other papers contain insights of relatives and also documents relating to the Town of Canterbury (tax documents, land records, etc). Elijah d. Mar. 7, 1888; she d. Oct. 6,1905. Both buried at Baldwin Cemetery, Canterbury, Conn.

Children were: Sarah (1846), Mary (1848-1849), Henry (1850), David (1852-1853), Hannah Burnham (1853), Abram (1860), Lucy (1863), and Helen (1865)
