About Dr. Gilbert Stanley Bogle
Victim of Mysterious Death. Dr. Gilbert Stanley Bogle died in an incident known throughout Australia as "The Bogle-Chandler Case." Dr. Bogle was a noted 38-year-old physicist who spoke several languages and was an accomplished musician. In 1963 he left a New Year's Eve party with Mrs. Margaret Olive Chandler, the 28-year-old wife of an associate. The next morning the couple was found dead beside the bank of the Lane Cove River, at a spot frequented by lovers. Both had died in distress but with no obvious marks on their bodies. Poison was suspected but numerous tests were failed to reveal the cause of their deaths. Much suspicious was cast on Mrs. Chandler husband, other lovers, accidental overdoses, and even assassination by the CIA or KGB, but in 2006 a television documentary offered a theory that has gained acceptance as the cause of the deaths: that they were overcome by an expulsion of a poisonous gas from the polluted river bed. Dr. Bogle's gravesite is a little over one mile from the spot where he died.
