About Dr. Harrison Peck Baldwin

HARRISON PECK9, Harrison8, Zebulon7, Jabez6, Zebulon5, David4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Joseph1 (of Milford & Hadley)

6th of 7

Harrison Peck Baldwin, son of Harrison Baldwin and Abigail Augusta Taylor was b. Dec. 26,1870 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. He died Nov. 22,1954 at Manchester, NH.

My Grandfather was born Dec 26,1870 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky; came to NH where he married Gramma, and lived on Elm Street in that city. I remember visiting their home where he kept suits of armor in the upstairs hallway, made homemade beer in the cellar and, because my grandmother would not abide it inside, was sent to the outside porch to smoke his pipes. He had a vast collection of meerschaum pipes which my own father inherited and displayed over the fireplace mantel for years.
Although I was quite young when he died, I remember that, at the camp they had at Pierce Lake in Hillsboro (right next door to my own parents camp), he would often sit at the makeshift patio out front (away from the lakeside) and regale the young children from along the shoreline with this or that tale of adventure and recall exciting stories of his childhood. Of course, with the preverbial pipe being waved around...to emphasize this or that point.
He was a large man, probably 6' in height (tho he seemed much larger to us small folk) with quite a booming voice.
The pearl handled dental tools spoken of in "Grandfather's Letter" were a source of great pride to him and passed to my father after his death. In truth, they were not pearl handled but had handles of in-laid mother-of -pearl.
I was told (if I remember it corrrectly) that he died while rocking in his chair on the porch of the house in Manchester....with a pipe in his hand.
Oh yes...his middle name? His father had great affection for his Aunt Hannah, born 1793, who married into the Peck family..who were great friends with the Baldwins at Sandy Creek, NY; hence his middle name.

The Red House in Andover, NH: A place where Harrison P. Baldwin rented for many years. Owned by Victor and Dolly Phelps, Harrison P. had a small dental office in the house. Mom and Dad, Harrison and Dick spent many summers there until about 1953. (at North St).

Dick visited there on Aug 12, 2007 and tlked at length with Victor Harrison Phelps and his wife Ella; as well as with Steven Smith, a nephew of Victor H. Phelps. Victor Harrison's father and mother were Victor and Dolly. Steve now lives in the house that Grampa and Gramma rented. He said little has changed since the 40's and 50's. It was painted red then as it is now. A few of the old Maple trees are gone except for one. The stone fireplace is still there. The detached summer room is no longer there.

Victor Harrison's middle name is after Grampa and Harrison Victors middle name is after Victor Harrison's dad.

Victor Harrison was a cousin of Cyrun Phelps of Danbury and Hillsboro.

Charles H. Baldwin, brother of Grampa, is buried in the Proctor Cemetery in Andover, NH (per Richard Baldwin).
