GREENSBORO -- Jean Bailey Brooks, 85, died Saturday, June 17 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Dr. Brooks was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina on August 2, 1920, then grew up in Raleigh where she graduated from Broughton High School. She went on to graduate from Duke University and then attended and graduated from the Wake Forest Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She was the first woman to graduate from Bowman Gray and was also the first woman to serve as President of the Bowman Gray Alumni Association.

During her residency at Bowman Gray she met her husband Dr. James Taylor Brooks, and together they began practicing medicine in Greensboro in 1948. Dr. Brooks was the first female Gynecologist in Greensboro where she also practiced Obstetrics. She also served as Director of the Greensboro Maternity Clinic from 1948-1952. She retired in 1988.

Dr. Brooks was very active and involved in her community. She attended and was an active and vital member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church from 1948-2006. She was the first President of Quota International of Greensboro, served as National Director of the American Hearing Society, and was selected as Mother of the Year in 1969 by the Greensboro Merchant's Society. She was given the Philanthropist of the Year Award in 2000 by the Triad Chapter of the National Society of Fundraising Executives.

She also served on many Boards including Bowman Gray School of Medicine Advisory Council, Eastern Music Festival, Children's Home Society, Greensboro Symphony, Greensboro Opera Company (Charter Member), Board of Directors of the UNC-G Musical Arts Guild, UNC-G School of Nursing Advisory Board and the Greensboro Academy of Medicine. Both Dr. Brooks and her husband were responsible for advancing higher education in the community through creating endowments to Bowman Gray, UNC-G and Greensboro Day School.

In addition to her parents, Isaac Mayo and Ida Thompson Bailey, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James Taylor Brooks, sister, Ida Hassel Bailey, brothers Isaac Mayo Bailey, Jr. and James Ruffin Bailey. She is survived by her children James Taylor Brooks, Jr. and Helen Elizabeth Brooks, both of Greensboro and was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren.
