On his settlement date in Alabama, John Barge came to this part of Alabama in or before 1819, according to his land purchases and the 1819 Conecuh County tax list. He was identified as a resident of Conecuh County when he purchased more land in Wilcox County in 1819.

He settled in the Pine Flat community about 1825. Besides his accomplishments as a doctor, John Barge helped erect the first Methodist Church in the Pine Flat Community. It was often referred to as "Dr. Barge's church."
