About Dr. Lewis Gordon Stone

Lewis Gordon Stone was born August 19,1905 in Antelope Township, North Dakota. He was the second of ten children. On September 19,1930, when he was 25 years old, Gordon married Alpha Soroos of Valley City, North Dakota. They were married in Moorehead, Minnesota. Gordon passed away July 29, 1985 in River Falls, Wisconsin at age 79 after a second stroke. His first stroke occurred three years earlier. He was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in River Falls, Wisconsin.

Gordon was raised on the family farm about seven miles from the small town of Mooreton, North Dakota. Mooreton is in the Red River Valley on the North Dakota - Minnesota border. He was the second son of Joshua Glenson Stone and Sarah McDonald. Gordon had nine brothers and sisters. Only four boys and one girl lived to be adults. They all attended one-room schools. Gordon went to nearby Wahpeton High School.

After High School Gordon went to Valley City, North Dakota where he enrolled in a six-week teacher-training program. In the fall Gordon got a teaching job in a country school near home. He taught all eight grades. He kept going to college each summer. With some experience and more education Gordon given a job in a country school south of Bismarck, North Dakota in Bluff County. Gordon went to summer school and the next full year. Alpha and Gordon met when they were both sophomores.

Gordon had a fifty-year career in education. He started in a rural Ibsen Township school upon high school graduation. He received a BA from Valley City State College, an MA from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from New York University. All of the degrees were in the field of psychology. He spent ten years in public schools teaching and in administration and then forty years at the college level which included Green Mountain College in Vermont, Winona State College in Minnesota, New York University, Illinois State University in Normal, and the last thirty years at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wisconsin.

While at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls Gordon held the following positions: Director, School of Education, Director Psychology Department, Director Teacher Education, Director of Placement, Director of Campus School, Dean College of Education, Director Coaches Clinic, Director Writers Conference and Professor Emeritus.
