About Dr. Orral Stanford Luke

Services for Bakersfield educator Dr. Orral S. Luke, 72, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ojai Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Luke died Tuesday in an Ojai hospital. Committal services have been set for 9 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road. Dr. Luke was director of guidance and counseling for Bakersfield College and Kern County Union High School District from 1943 until his retirement from teaching 1967. He was also an instructor for Fresno State College, Bakersfield campus. Active in civic and church work, Dr. Luke was president of Bakersfield Kiwanis Club and Phi Delta Kappa. For many years he served on the board of directors of the Children's Home Society, Mental Health Society, Sheriff's Committee on Rehabilitation and served 20 years as chairman for the Civil Service Commission of the City of Bakersfield. After his retirement from Bakersfield College, he and his wife served a two-year term at the LDS Temple Visitor's Center in Laie, Hawaii. They returned to the mainland to live in Ojai, where he acted as president of the Ojai Retired Business and Professional Men's Club. Always active in LDS church affairs, Dr. Luke spent two days a week as a supervisor in the LDS Los Angeles Temple during the last six years of his life. Dr. Luke was born July 23, 1903, in Junction, Utah. He was graduated from the University of Idaho in 1928 and received his masters from the University of Utah in 1935. In 1938 he earned an Ed.D. from the University of California.

Survivors include his widow Marjorie, Ojai; 2 daughters, Joan of San Diego and Marcia Merta of Lake Isabella; 1 son, Dr. Larry S. Luke of Woodland Hills; 5 grandchildren; 2 brothers and sister.
