Husband of Grissell Hay.


Dr. Peter Hay, a prominent physician, rented his house and shop at the corner of Queen and Duke of Gloucester Streets in 1740. He put up a rebus sign with a haystack between his initials. Like other doctor-apothecaries, Hay recommended and sold drugs and sundries. His customers included planters from outlying plantations who acted as physicians to their families and slave populations.
