Per the Sacramento County Great Registration Record of 1867, he was listed as Ovendo Hurlbut, a 62-year old physician from New York and was residing in Sacramento, California. In the 1870 census for Sacramento, California, O. Hurlbut, 65, was living with wife Clarissa, 56, and son Ovando, 25 years old. They were all born in New York. Mr. Hurlbut was working as a physician and his wife was keeping house and Ovando was working as a farm hand. From another Sacramento County Great Register Record of 1867, Samuel Ovando Hurlbut was 21 years old and working as a farmer and living in Franklin, California.
