Dr. Samuel Shields, died at his residence in Grainger county, August 17, at 6:30 p.m. after an short illness. The subject was born in Greene County, Tenn. July 5, 1802. He was married to Eliza, daughter of John Shields, October 28, 1828. Ten children were the result of this marriage, five of whom are dead. At the age of 25, Dr. Shields began the practice of medicine at Newport, Tenn. where he remained for years, from which place he removed to Sevierville and engaged in the mercantile business for the term of one year. Since that time, a period of about 58 years, he has resided in Grainger county near Blaine's X Roads, where he had a large and extensive practice. About six years ago he retired from his profession being to old to attend his heavy practice. He never looked or sought his own comfort, but his life was one of continual sacrifice for those he loved.
