Wilhelm Hoffman (1588-1645), a native of Prague, whose family roots could be traced to Jan (Johann) Hoffman (1371-1451), professor of anatomy at Charles University, later removed to Leipzig where, together with his colleagues from Prague, was instrumental in establishing the University of Leipzig and becoming its first Rector. Ottův slovník naučný states that he was born in Svidnice, Bohemia and died in Meissen, Saxony, where he became bishop in 1414. Some American genealogists claimed that he descended from Wilhelm Hoffman (1285-1350), a native of Prague, who was his great-grandfather.
