Object description
Collection of papers chiefly consisting of a number of ms essays, with ts transcriptions, written by Weinberg in which he recalls his experiences throughout the 1930s and 1940s when he was involved in providing medical support to the Spanish Civil War and suffered internment in Vichy France at St Cyprien and Gurs. Together with a good selection of official paperwork regarding his internment and medical work, including immunisation certificates, case notes and identification passes, plus paperwork concerning his struggle after the war to obtain citizenship back home in Germany before his eventual acceptance by Britain.
Content description
"BASIC ACCESSION RECORD] Important collection of ms reminiscences (with ts transcription), official documents and family photographs kept by Jewish doctor Willy Weinberg and relating largely to his internment in Vichy France during the Second World War. The real value of the collection lies in its story of a Jewish doctor whose life was deeply affected by conflict, firstly in Spain and then as an internee in Vichy France, resulting in him enduring the status of a homeless refugee for some 15 years. After the war he struggled to obtain citizenship back home in Germany but was eventually accepted by Britain, where he would make his home for the remainder of his life. "That day in June 1948 when I received the General Medical Council's Registration Certificate was the coronation of all my efforts, and made all previous suffering worthwhile in giving me back that status which I was deprived of since April 1933."
