About Dulcia Bold

Dulcie Savage, daughter of John Savage, Esq., died before 1497 at Bold, Lancashire, England, when her husband’s widow was Ellen. The will of her son Richard confirms her place of burial in the St. Luke’s Churchyard, Bold Chapel, Eastern End of the North Aisle., Farnworth. The name is also seen as Dowse and Dulcia. Was Dulcie a nickname? Dulcia as a girl's name is a variant of Dulce (Latin), and the meaning of Dulcia is "sweet" Dowse then and now have basically had the same meaning, Dowse, must be a mistake.

Family

Her marriage settlement to 4 Sir Henry Bold, Knight (son of Richard) is dated 20 Oct 1464.
They had the following children:

  1. M i Sir Richard BOLD Knight was born 1472 and died 16 Nov 1528.
  2. M ii Tuger BOLD 1, 2, 3 was born 1475 in Bold, Lancashire, England. He died May 1495 in Doncaster, West Riding, Yorkshire, England.
  3. M iii Roger BOLD 1 was born 1478 in Bold, Lancashire, England.
  4. F iv Maud BOLD was born 1481.
  5. F v Agnes BOLD was born 1484.

Notes

A brief history of the Bold family appears on pp. 402-407 of VCH Lancaster 3. From this source we know that Henry's first marriage to Dulcia Savage [daughter of John Savage] was arranged by his grandfather in Oct. 1464 [the editor of VCH Lancaster quoting as his source "Dods. MSS. cxlii, n. 98"]. Also from this compilation we know that Henry's widow in 1497 was Ellen, and that she was still living, though re-married, in 1527. The various extant visitations give his children by his first wife as Richard, Roger, Tuger, and Matilda (Maud). His son John was by his wife Ellen. Henry Bold was knighted along with Humphrey Savage [likely his brother-in-law] [NO] after the battle of Stoke (1487). He was a witness to three deeds dated in Aug. 1489 [Lancashire Record Office - DDBL 55/35-37].
His marriage settlement with Dulcie Savage was dated Oct. 20, 1464 [see Beamont MSS #579], and he was made a knight on Jun. 16, 1487 at the battle of Stoke-on-Trent [see Shaw's The Knights of England 2:25].

Disputed Origins

Dulcia is seen as a daughter of Sir John Savage & Catherine Stanley, (references 1, 2, 3). However, Plantagenet Ancestry: A Study In Colonial And Medieval Families, 2nd Edition ... 2011 Page 143. GoogleBooks shows Sir John Savage, K.G. (son of John Savage & Eleanor Brereton) & Katherine Stanley did not have a daughter “Dulcia.” Their 5 daughters were Ellen, Katherine, Margaret, Alice & Elizabeth.

Dulcia Alice Savage:

  • 1 Source Death: 1480 in Bold, Prescot, Lancashire, England
  • 1 Source Relatives: John Savage (Father) and Elizabeth Brereton (Mother).

But John Savage & Elizabeth Brereton had 1 son: John, K.G., and two daughters: Margery & Margaret Ref: Plantagenet Ancestry: A Study In Colonial And Medieval Families, 2nd Edition ... 2011 Page 143. GoogleBooks

Note A. There is much confusion regarding the generation-attribution of various of the daughters of various of the John Savages of Clifton. We have tried to use dates and common sense to attribute them correctly but where there is doubt we prefer to show them a generation earlier rather than later as otherwise people may presume an additional maternal line that turns out to be irrelevant.

  • Sir John Savage of Clifton (b c1422, d 22.11.1495) m. Catherine Stanley (dau of Thomas Stanley, 1st Lord, sister of Thomas, 1st Earl of Derby)
    • n. Dowse (or Dulcia) Savage possibly of this generation Armstrong shows Dowse 3 generations earlier whilst Visitation shows an Alice (m. Sir Henry Bold of Bold) 2 generations earlier! However, the dates make it look as though Dowse was of this generation.
