About Ebenezer Baldwin
EBENEZER 4, Joseph 3, Joseph 2, Joseph 1
Ebenezer, son of Joseph Baldwin and Elizabeth Grover, was b. in Malden, Massachusetts, on August 1, 1713. He was among the first settlers of Egremont, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, apparently about 1730. "The Shawenon Purchase" was deeded by the Indians to Ebenezer Baldwin and others for 20 pounds English. [See Holland's "History of Western Massachusetts."]. Administration upon his estate was given June 1800, to his s. James, of the same place; and distribution was made to the widow MARY, who lived to be 78 yrs. old, and to the following:
Children: (1) Joseph , administration of his estate of Egremont was given, 1803,, to his brother James. It was insolvent. (2.) Samuel, in December 1828, an M.D. in Oxford, New York. (Letter of that date to brother James). (3.) James, b. 1758, (4.) Mary and (5.) Jonathan
A letter of James, in the Worcester Mss., dated Dec. 1828, says he was then 70; father was b. in Walden; thence to Leicester, Massachusetts; thence to Long Island; thence to New York City, in 1748, where he knew Gen Delancey, and finally settled in Egremont.

Riverside Cemetery Directions: From the center of the village of North Egremont on Route 71, go past the Elm Court Inn. Just as you go around the curve, this cemetery will be on the right side of Route 71 toward the Green River.
The Riverside Cemetery was so named as it sets on the bank of the Green River that flows by it. The original part of the cemetery antedates the Revolution. Victims of smallpox were buried there as a tradition about the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
An important grace is that Ebenezer Baldwin, after whom Baldwin Hill is named. He was born in Malden, Massachusetts, and was one of the early settlers. In 1757 Mr. Baldwin went to Boston on business for the proprietors of the Shanenon Purchase, he being of the original owners of the tract of land. He was also known for having set an orchard of 999 apple trees.
1756 - Shawenon Purchase: Shawenon Purchase; Stockbridge Indians sell a substantial tract of land to Egremont Proprietors for 20 pounds. This marks one of the final significant land transactions between the Stockbridge Indians and the early settlement families for the land in what now comprises North and South Egremont.
