Ebenezer Hartwell, eldest child of John and Priscilla (Wright) Hartwell was born in Concord, MA, February 28, 1665 or April 5, 1666 (p. 12)[1], and died in Carlisle, January 1, 1723-4. He bought his homestead of his father in law and the southern half of the house where John S. Keyes lately lived in Concord village across the line in Carlisle. (p. 6)[2]
He married March 27, 1690, Sarah Smedley (p. 32) [1], daughter of John and Sarah (Wheeler) Smedley, who was born in 1670 and died November 13, 1715. (p. 6)[2](p. 122)[3]
THE ELISHA JONES HOUSE, Concord, MA: Situated on Monument Street, a short distance from the lane leading to the Battle ground and just beyond the Old Manse on the opposite side of the way. Its first owner was John Smedley, an original grantee of Huguenot descent, who arrived at the Concord plantation probably before 1640.
As first constructed the house contained but two rooms, one above the other, and faced the four points of the compass. The frame was of ash the boarding of pitch pine, the latter having edges that overlapped to protect from the weather. The lower portion of the chimney was made of stone and clay mortar and its dimensions were twelve feet by eight. John Smedley Jr., the son of John Smedley the first proprietor, who married Sarah Wheeler on May 5, 1669, was the second owner of the house and he added two rooms on the south side and between them an entry and stairway and perhaps the east leanto. From John Jr. the house passed to his son-in-law Ebenezer Hartwell, who married Sarah Smedley, daughter of John Jr. (p. 301)[4]
As previously discussed, the tax records indicated that Sarah Smedley remained in the house until 1724. In the tax records from 1722 and 1723, Ebenezer Hartwell, Jr., was listed as the other owner and presumably the occupant of the property.27
Ebenezer Hartwell, Jr., owned the property until May 1724, when he sold it to Samuel Jones for 210 pounds. The property would remain in the Jones family for more than a century, and was owned by Elisha Jones on April 19, 1775.
