Bowlus Cemetery, Umatilla, Oregon

The cemetery can be found by driving 4.8 miles south of the Washington-Oregon stateline on Powerline Road or 8 1/10 miles from Walla Walla, Washington on Powerline Road.

Located on the original Lewis Bowlus farm, this cemetery is approximately five acres in size. It is said to have started in 1873. The cemetery sign once hung from the arched gateway but is now propped up on a wooden cross on the bank near the road.
This cemetery has a fence around it on two sides only with a dry, seasonal creek as the boundary on the north and the west side towards the road has a steep bank, but no fence. Most of the weeds have been mowed. It has been terribly vandalized in the past. There are many broken headstones.
Someone has put up metal crosses where loved ones were buried and a field of metal painted signs that tell what their names were and the info that would have been on a headstone. There must be a number of other unknown graves here. One sign says:
"The peoples names written to the right are buried where the white pipe crosses are in the cemetery."
Jim Gleaton and I walked and recorded these headstones on Sep 01, 2005, using a digital camera. Individual photos are available by email.
