am busy collecting all Perdue-Indian connections. I am aware of the alleged Edith Powell( Mourning Hale) and William U. Perdue II marriage and the fact that Edith was the new Christian name of Miss Hale. If so she would have had to be a member of one of the tribes of the Powhatan Federation. There were two or three different tribes in that area during that time period. I have also uncovered the fact that William U Perdue I 's wife, Mary Hatchett's mother was a Bass. The Basses were full-blood Nansemond Indians and to this day...the Nansemond chief is a Bass. I'm almost positive there are Blackfoot (Piedmont Siouan), Melungeon and Cherokee connections also...so please if you know something..or if you think you know something..post it here or to me directly at mlc4059@yahoo.com and let me research it. Thanks, Mike

Dear Mike: the Nansemond Basses are descendants of John Basse b. 1616 (in London, England) and his Nansemond wife, known by her Christian name of Elizabeth.

Elizabeth Bass Hatchett was a granddaughter of John's brother William b. 1618 (in London), who married Sarah Batten or Batton. I don't know of any Nansemond ancestry in William's line.

(The Bass DNA Project has also demonstrated that there are many unrelated Bass lines in the U.S.)

The current Nansemond Chief (in 2017) is Lee Lockamy.

I wish you luck searching for the mysterious Edith Powell/Mourning Hale.
