The father of Ernest Oppenheimer, Eduard Oppenheimer, ahd the first shop in Friedberg selling cigars and tobacco only. The family was well-to-do, but by no means rich.

Jewish children attended the same schools as other children. In those days education was already compulsory in Germany.

Ernest Oppenheimer attendedthe Augustiner School (Humanistisches Gymnasium), a school for teaching French and the classified languages, Latin and Greek, from 1890 - 1896. At thistime pupils could not pass their matriculation at this school. At the age of 16 Oppenheimer had not passed an examination to gain him entry to University.
