Edward Burrus/Burrrowes/Burroughs Sr, born about 1645 immigrated to America with possible family members, John and Joseph, due to religious persecution of Quakers. He along with others purchased of land from Indians July 11 1677 and he purchased five acres in 1683 in Jamaica, Long Island. He was one of the members of the committee that built the Meeting House in 1698 and served as a justice of peace from October 12 1703 to1704. He married Mary Higby, daughter of Edward and Lidia Higby, in Jamaica, Long Island about 1670 and is named as the wife of Edward Burroughs. He died before March 27 1705 the date his will was proved in Jamaica, Queens, New York Colony. After his death Mary Higby married Thomas Oakley September 15 1705.[1][2] [3][4]

John Burroughs, his eldest son, was given land in Connecticut and others were concerned with the wording of the will and the inheritance of his siblings. For twenty pounds he did the following: John Burrowes of Stratford, Connecticut, son and heir to Edward Burrowes of Jamaica deceased. Whereas my above said father Edward Burrowes did by his last will and testament bearing date the first day of March last give & grant to my beloved brothers Edward, Thomas, Eden & Steven sundry lands - whereas seeing some persons have that the will was not worded so well but I or my heirs might deprive my said Brothers heirs from the enjoyment of the same lands -- for - twenty pounds - I do hereby acquit exonerate & discharge myself my heirs from any title or pretence whatsoever to any of the said lands --. John Burrowes Witnesses, William Urquhart, Robert Read. Acknowledged, 11 Jun 1705 before Justice of the Peace, Robert Read; Entered 25 Jul 1705, S. Clowes, Town Clerk.
