About Edward Erwin, of Long Glade

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Erwin-71

EDWARD ERWIN was born Abt. (need source for 21 Oct) 1689 in Ulster, Ireland, and died (need source for 13 March) 1772 in Long Glade, Augusta County, Virginia. He married FRANCES (surname may be FRANCIS) Abt. 1705 in Ireland. She was born Abt. 1685 in Ireland.

They immigrated to the United States in about 1740, landing in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. According to Mrs Marg L Morris' "The Irvins, Doaks, Logan and McCampbells of VA & KY", Edward (and quite possibly his sons) acquired large patents of land from "King Charles (George?) II for military service rendered either before he came to America, or after in some of the border wars". These original patents were dated March of 1747 and April of 1748.

In 1742, Capt John Smith's militia company in Augusta Co, which was then Orange County, had listed Andrew Erwin, John Erwin, two Edward Erwins, Francis Erwin and Benjamin Erwin.

In 1751, Edward Erwin and wife Frances deeded to son Edward Erwin Jr, yeoman, 206 acres, part of original patents dated March 1747 and April 1748.

In 1757, Edward Erwin Sr, yeoman deeded to Francis Erwin, yeoman 148 ac, part of the original patent of April 1748 also 100 ac part of the original patent of March 1747.

On page 11 of the Irvin, Doak, Logan and McCampbell book, Mrs Margaret Morris references a letter from a descendant living near Bridgewater, VA that claimed to have seen an "old deed dated 28 Mar 1759, signed by John Ervin and Jean Ervin, his wife and witnessed by Andrew, Francis, and Edward Ervin" (sons of Edward I and Frances)". This grant was made by King George II and signed by R Dinwiddie, Lt Gov on 16 Aug 1757.

Children of EDWARD ERWIN and FRANCES (FRANCIS?) are (not in order):

2. i. FRANCIS ERWIN, b. Abt. 1729, Ulster, Ireland; d. Abt. 1791, Augusta County, VA. ( I don't know where this birth year was found for Francis, most online trees have 1710-1713)

ii. JOHN ERWIN, m. JANE WILLIAMS. b c 1715, died before 15 Feb 1761 when his will was proven. Their children; Edward, Benjamin, Samuel, Andrew, John, William, Jean, Margaret, Mary (m Alex. Curry), Frances and Francis.

iii. ROBERT ERWIN, m. ANN CROCKETT. Presbyterian Minister. Deed Bk 2, pg 125 From Benjamin Borden, made before 1742 and rec 6 Feb 1748/49. Settled in Rockbridge County, VA. Deed dated 15 Nov 1751 100 AC from Borden's Tract adj Frances and William Brown. His will named his wife Ann and issue; Sons Robert, Benjamin, Edward, Jonas, Joseph and daughter Hannah who married James Logan.

3. iv. ANDREW ERWIN, m. ANN UNKNOWN. He died in 1765 and his will

v. EDWARD ERWIN, m. MARY CURRY. [SIC: he married Ann, seen as Corry, widow of James Patterson]

vi. FRANCES ERWIN married William Brown as evidenced by her father's will dated 13 Jan 1772 and proved 19 May 1772 Augusta County, VA.

vii ELIZABETH ERWIN married Robert Law as evidenced by the will of her father and also an Augusta Co, VA court judgement citing Elizabeth Law against her husband Robert Law dated 20 June 1775.

viii BENJAMIN ERWIN married Mary Curry. Evidenced by the deed dated 24 April 1790, Joseph Erwin, heir of Benjamin Erwin, dec'd, of Johnston County, NC, conveyed to John Erwin 350 ac of land in Augusta Co, VA which had been patented to Edward Erwin in 1748.

Research Notes

Jared Erwin is not known to be one of the five (six counting Benjamin) sons of Edward and Frances and was detached. He is more likely a grandson.

The spelling of the surname is interchangeable, even within the same document and a claim that the original spelling was Irvine, as in the River Irvine in Scotland.

Notes

The name Erwin was Ervin derived from the ancient Celto - Sythick Erinvine, which signifieth a true or stout westland man for Erin in the old Gaelic means west, and therefore Ireland is to this day called Erin. Dr. Christopher Irvine historiographer to King Charles II in 1687, derived from the gaelic erin - west and vine - himself combined erinvine - a rsolute wesland man, he also said the Ervins came to Ireland with the Scots under Fergus, about A D 503, inhabited the lands about the Irvine water ( Ayrshire ) and later removed to the west border.
