Edward's father, John Hart, was the Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey.

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NEW JERSEY with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A051464

He served several enlistments as a private in the New Jersey Militia. He served in battles of Long Island, New York, August 27, 1776 and White Plains, New York on October 28, 1776. Served from 1775-1783. After his father's farm was destroyed in the Revolutionary War he moved to Virginia in 1788. He contracted to build the first jail in Randolph County, VA and he was active in civic affairs. The first land battle of the Civil War was fought on his son, Joseph's, land in the Rich Mountains.
