Edward Laurence Leahy, a Senator from Rhode Island; born in Bristol, R.I., February 9, 1886; attended the public schools; student at Brown University in 1904 and 1905; graduated from the law school of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1908; admitted to the Rhode Island bar in 1908 and commenced the practice of law in Bristol, R.I.; judge of probate court in Bristol 1910-1939; member, State house of representatives 1911-1913; elected to the Bristol school committee in 1913; served as master of chancery in the superior court; during the First World War served as a first lieutenant, Judge Advocate General’s Department, United States Army; administrator of State taxes 1919-1948; director of State department of revenue and regulation 1939; director of finance, member of State sinking fund commission, and State retirement board 1942-1946; adviser to the State department of finance 1948-1949; appointed on August 24, 1949, as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. Howard McGrath and served from August 24, 1949, to December 18, 1950, a successor having been elected and qualified; was not a candidate for election to the vacancy; United States judge for the district of Rhode Island from January 1951 until his death in Bristol, R.I., July 22, 1953; interment in North Cemetery.
