About Edward Pulaski Lacey

From "General Edward Lacey and his descendants" - Library of Congress, 1940-1944,, compiled by Robert Alexander Lacey

Dr. Edward Pulaski born 1856 - died 1933. When the civil war broke out he was 5 year old. At the close of the war, his father who had been a well-to-do- farmer and slave owner found himself practically destitute, as the Yankees had destroyed everything of value on the farm. Edward then left the farm and worked his way through Vanderbilt University, graduating in surgery and medicine about 1882. He became the first doctor for the Woodward Iron Company and, in later years, the Chief Surgeon of the company. Doctor Lacey was a learned man and probably knew as much Civi War history as any layman, being constantly in demand as a speaker on historical subjects.

He also took a special course in surgery at the Chicago Polycliinic and became a surgeon of some note. For many years he served on the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Education. At one time he was a member of the State House of Representatives.

About 1883 he married Margaret Elizabeth Morris, daughter of a prominent coal merchant in Mobile, Alabama. She was born in Quincy, Illinois, but later moved with the family to Mobile, Alabama, where she was educated. She died in 1907 in Bessemer. They had seven children:

Edward Phillip (1885-1962)

William Morris

James Curry

Joseph Edwin

Kate Bragg

Robert Edward (Jack)

Dr Charles Morris (1901-1929)
