About Edward Nix

Generation No. 6

6. Edward6 NIX (James (or John) (NICKES)5, John4, William3, Thomas2, Joseph Allen1) was born Nov 1686 in St Peters Parish, New Kent Co., VA, and died Oct 08, 1776 in Camden District, York Co., SC. He married Unice "Nice" GIBSON Abt. 1711 in VA. She was born Abt. 1692 in New Kent, Hanover Co., VA.

Notes for Edward NIX:

WHO TO BELIEVE - WHAT TO BELIEVE!!!! Who has documentation!? Who can solve the mystery? Let's get this lineage right.

I found some trees have Edward's parents as Samuel Jess Nix (b. 1703) and Nancy Sherman. Now doesn't this just make things really confusing? But you cannot dispute documentation and since there was a baptismal record and will, the father of Edward AND the approximate year of birth and death leaves no questions or mystery. These trees have Edward being born in 1723 and being married to Unice Gibson being born in 1729. Where are these researchers getting their information/proof?

From what I understand, in existence is a baptismal record which names James as the father of this Edward. There is record that a new parish was built next to his property. Edward's father-n-law had a will and in it mentions his daughter, Nice who was Edward's wife. Edward left a will in 1776 (see below), which shows he died in SC. It clearly is in Camden District, SC. Some researchers show a different death location.

Christening: 7 NOV 1686

alternate birth: 9 Aug 1728 - no way if someone has documentation that he was christened in 1686!!!

alternate birth: 1723 - if believing his father was Samuel Jess Nix b. 1703

alternate death: 24 JAN 1795 VA - although it is possible people live past 100 and this date is possible IF he was born in 1728. Being that his father was believed to be born in 1642, his father would have been 86 when Edward was born (if going by the year 1728). I understand that many Nix descendants lived very long lives so it is very possible Edward fathered children when he was up there in age.

  • ** Notes: In his will, he does not mention having a son named Ambrose - unless this son died before he did OR he just did not leave him anything. He does mention a grandson named Ambrose. He does not mention Phoebe unless she died before he did OR he just did not leave her anything. He only mentions 5 children in his will. He does not mention Edward as a son. Either Edward died before he did OR he just did not leave him anything.

Notes for Unice "Nice" GIBSON:

She is found in her father's will and her husband's will and her name is Nice and not Nero. It is believed with the handwriting technique back those days that her name may have appeared to be Nero. No documents have been located to prove her name was Nero or contained the name Nero.

More About Edward NIX and Unice GIBSON:

Marriage: Abt. 1711, VA

Children of Edward NIX and Unice GIBSON are:

+ 7 i. James "Jim"7 NIX, Sr., born Oct 20, 1758 in Hanover Co., VA; died Nov 21, 1845 in Harris Co., GA.

+ 8 ii. Ambrose I. NIX, born Bet. 1721 - 1726 in VA; died Abt. 1820 in Chester Co., SC.

+ 9 iii. Valentine NIX, born Nov 11, 1749 in Camden, York Co., SC; died Feb 10, 1826 in Pickens Co., SC.

10 iv. George Albert NIX, born Sep 04, 1754 in Camden, York Co., SC; died Abt. 1832 in York Co., SC. He married Margaret LYONS.

Notes for George Albert NIX:

George is mentioned in his father's will.

Many researchers have his birth as 1754. They also have his father as Edward and mother as Unice Nero Gibson.

There are various trees either showing Edward being born 1686 or 1723, If Edward was born in 1686 and George was born in 1754, then Edward was 68 when George was born. I tend to doubt this. If Edward was born 1723 and George was born 1754, Edward was 31 when George was born. More realistic.

I believe many trees have a missing generation. If the birth information is accurate for children supposedly belonging to Edward and Unice Gibson, with these children being born in the 1750's and Edward being born 1686, something is wrong. I doubt these children beling to Edward and Unice. They may be grandchildren or Edward's yearof bith is wrong at being in 1686.

If Edward was actually born in 1723, then his father would not have been James who was born in 1642. If Edward was born in 1723, this would mean his father James was 81 when he was born. I tend to not believe he fathered children this late in life. If Edward was born in 1686 and his father was James, who was born in 1642, then James was 44 when he was born. I would tend to believe this.

11 v. Sabra (Sarah) Ann NIX, born Sep 19, 1755 in Camden, York Co., SC; died Feb 19, 1772 in Camden, York Co., SC. She married James LAX.

Notes for Sabra (Sarah) Ann NIX:

Sabra is mentioned in her fath's will as Sabra Lox/Lax. Her mother would have been about 63 when she was born. Possible?

12 vi. Frances NIX, born Abt. 1720 in New Kent, Hanover Co., VA; died Abt. 1776 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. She married James DOSS, Sr. Abt. 1740 in Amelia Co., VA; born Abt. 1715 in New Kent, Hanover Co., VA; died May 1796 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.

Notes for Frances NIX:

Frances/Francis is mentioned in her father's will as with last name of Doss.

Marriage: Abt. 1740, Amelia Co., VA

+ 13 vii. Edward Olson NIX, born Abt. 1718 in Camden, York Co., SC; died Oct 15, 1816 in Twiggs Co, GA.

14 viii. Phoebe NIX, born Oct 17, 1747 in York Co., SC. She married Elisha LYON; born Abt. 1720 in MD.

Notes for Phoebe NIX:

Phoebe IS NOT mentioned in Edward's will. She could have died before Edward died or he just did not leave her anything. She may not be the daughter of Edward (Phoebe Nix Lyon preceded her father in death circa1760. Her son, John Lyon, is mentioned prominently in his grandfather's will, and is named as an executor of the estate. Cathy Culbertson 3/20/10)
