E T VEAZEY DEAD AFTER 32 YEARS SERVICE IN NAVY
Native of Wilmington Who Had Distinguished MD Connections
Buried with Honors
The curtain was rung down at Annapolis, MD yesterday on the final chapter in the long and active career of a native of Wilmington who since reaching manhood had devoted almost his entire life to his country's service. The occasion was the funeral of Edward T Veazey who had come of distinguished ancestry and had served in the US Navy for 32 years, finally as a boatswain, which office he filled when he was retired three years ago.
Deceased was born in this city 65 years ago. He was the son of Mrs Phoebe Ann Veazey of No. 12 Vista Street, Wilmington, where a brother, George L Veazey, also lives. Deceased was also a brother of former policeman Frank Veazey of Wilmington. He was a great-grandson of Governor Thomas Ward Veazey of MD and a great-grandnephew of Governor John C Groome of MD. He entered the Navy 32 years ago and his service was continuous for all of the 32 years prior to his retirement, advancing through various stages of the service.
Last June, due to an infection where a particle of skin had been rubbed off the right heel, it was found necessary to amputate the foot. Recovering from this affliction, Mr Veazey was attacked with kidney trouble followed by a complication, which resulted in death last Monday.
Having long been a resident of Annapolis, Mr Veazey had endeared himself to the community. He was one of the best versed men there in the history of the nation, state and city, as well as of the navy, and being of a genial disposition, it was always a pleasure to engage him in conversation. Following his retirement he spent much of his time walking about Annapolis accompanied by his two dogs, his chief delight being to chat with friends and take a real interest in naval and local affairs. He was buried with naval honors, interment being made in the Naval Academy cemetery.
Mrs Veazey, three daughters, Blanche, May and Bertha, and one son, John, survive. All live in Annapolis.
